Director Department of Public Safety
André Vervooren has been the Director of the Safety Department for the City of Rotterdam since September 2011. He is the chief advisor to the Mayor and the City Council concerning safety issues and is responsible for designing Rotterdam’s new safety strategy: “#Veilig010” (2014-2018).
He is a member of the Safety Steering Committee, chaired by the Mayor; the Steering Committee for the ‘Safety House’ (group of various institutions that collectively deal with specific crimes and crime groups); and the Steering Committee for the RIEC (group of various authorities that collectively combat serious and organised crime). André also leads the “stadsmariniers” (“city marines”), highly skilled officials who tackle safety problems in the toughest areas of town. In addition, he represents Rotterdam in the Executive Committee of the European Forum of Urban Security (Efus).
